Texas Tree Service Requirements & Licensing
What tree service companies need to know about operating legally in Texas — licensing, insurance, and local regulations.
Operating a Tree Service in Texas
Unlike California and Florida, Texas does not require a state-level contractor’s license specifically for tree service work. However, this does not mean tree service companies can operate without any credentials. Local municipalities, insurance requirements, and professional standards still apply.
While there is no mandatory state license, many Texas tree service companies pursue ISA Certified Arborist certification to differentiate themselves and qualify for commercial and municipal contracts. Some cities in Texas have their own licensing requirements, so always check with local authorities.
What You Need in Texas
City-Specific Rules to Know
- Austin has strict Heritage Tree ordinances (19″+ diameter)
- Houston requires permits for removing protected trees
- Dallas has a Tree Preservation Ordinance for commercial properties
- San Antonio regulates Live Oak and other heritage species
- Many cities require a local business license to operate
- HOA communities may have their own tree removal rules
- TDA license required for pesticide/herbicide application
- Workers’ comp required once you have employees
Texas Tip: Even without a state license requirement, carrying proper insurance and pursuing ISA certification dramatically increases your close rate on quotes. Many homeowners and all commercial clients will ask for proof of insurance before signing.
